4 Tips to Get the Most from Your Tyres

More Miles for Your Money

If you feel like a significant portion of your paycheck goes toward car expenses—like fuel, maintenance, and wear-and-tear items such as tyres and brakes—you’re not alone. So, how can you get the most out of your tyres and stretch your budget? Here are four essential tips to help you extend the life of your tyres.

1. Keep Them Inflated!

Proper tyre pressure is crucial for tyre longevity. Tyres need to be inflated correctly to function effectively and perform optimally. Both overinflation and underinflation can lead to faster wear, negatively impacting handling and fuel efficiency. Use a tyre gauge to check your tyre pressure monthly and before long trips. You can find the recommended tyre pressure on a label inside the driver’s door or in the owner’s manual. Always check tyre pressure when the tyres are “cold,” meaning the vehicle hasn’t been driven for at least three hours.

2. Ensure Proper Alignment

Misaligned wheels can cause uneven tyre wear, leading to premature replacement. Additionally, misalignment may indicate other mechanical issues that could affect tyre performance. For optimal results, visit a shop that employs precise computer-assisted alignment systems (like TyreZim) and request a printout of the adjustment angles for your service records.

3. Rotate Your Tyres Regularly

Different wheels on your car experience varying forces based on their position, which can result in uneven tread wear. Regularly rotating your tyres, as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer (often every 5,000 km), helps ensure even tread wear and maintains optimal tyre performance.

4. Check for Balance

Tyres and wheels that are out of balance not only cause annoying vibrations but can also lead to uneven tread wear, reducing ride comfort and necessitating early replacement. At our TyreZim branches, we use electronic spin balancers. These machines are more accurate and ensure a smooth ride.

By following these tips, you can significantly extend the life of your tyres and get more value from your investment in your vehicle.
